Must-have certifications before the season
STCW, ENG1, PDSD, HELM, GMDSS — what each one is, which expires first and which tips the hiring decision.
Before the season most captains run a sweep of crew certificate expiry dates. An STCW that expires one day before sailing forces embarkation reshuffles and, at some ports of call, offloading sensitive gear. Reviewing the list early is a minimal investment.
STCW Basic Safety Training has a five-year validity and requires a refresher in Personal Survival, Firefighting and First Aid. Many schools run a three-day condensed refresher; book it from February because slots fill fast.
ENG1 medical expires every two years. There is no refresher: it's a full medical exam with an authorised GP (there is a public list on the MCA website). If you're going through any recent medical treatment, schedule with margin.
PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security Duties) is mandatory for all crew with security duties; PSSR is only for those without PDSD. HELM Operational is the three-day leadership course required before OOW — no HELM, no oral pass.
GMDSS GOC is critical for officers: radio and emergency communications. ECDIS is mandatory if the bridge carries certified electronic charts — on modern yachts, always. Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats is asked on yachts whose tender is run by crew.
The minimum list for a 2026 season deckhand is: current STCW BST, valid ENG1, PDSD and Powerboat Level 2. For a deck officer: add OOW, HELM, ECDIS, GMDSS and Advanced Firefighting. Without those five, no serious captain signs off.
